HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod to Continue Its Research into Dynamical Systems
The mega-grant awarded by the Russian government to the International Laboratory of Dynamical Systems and Applications at HSE University’s Nizhny Novgorod campus has been extended to 2022–2023. The Academic Supervisor of the laboratory is Dmitry Turaev, a leading specialist in the field of dynamical systems and Professor at Imperial College London. Professor Turaev spoke to the HSE News Service about the results achieved by the laboratory so far and its plans for the next two years.
The origins of our lab date back to the 1930s. While working in Gorky (present-day Nizhny Novgorod), Aleksandr Andronov, a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, founded a new field in oscillation theory and dynamical systems. His students and followers went on to work in various universities in the city, which were unified in 2015 into the Nizhny Novgorod campus of HSE University. Since then, HSE has been a leading global centre in the study of dynamical systems and applications. Our laboratory was created in 2017, and we received a mega-grant from the Russian government in 2019.
Dmitry Turaev is a Professor at Imperial College London, one of the UK’s leading universities. He graduated from the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics at Gorky State University (now Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod) and is a former pupil of the late Leonid Shilnikov, a renowned Soviet and Russian mathematician and long-term head of the Andronov School. Professor Turaev has worked in Israel and Germany, and currently teaches and conducts research in the UK. He has written over 140 scientific articles and two monographs that have been published in English, Russian, and Chinese. His areas of research interest include dynamical systems, bifurcation theories, and game dynamics.
The laboratory’s main goal for 2019–2021 was the development of the theory of dynamical systems and differential equations, as well as the related issues of foliation theory, group theory, and computational modelling and analytical research of systems with applications in physics, geophysics and engineering.
Research has been conducted in six key areas:
chaos, attractors, and bifurcation theory;
topological methods of researching dynamic systems;
foliation theory, algebraic curve theory, differential geometry and manifolds with additional structures;
the dynamics and statistics of ensembles of coherent structures, non-linear waves;
parabolic equation theory, evolution semigroups of operators, ergodic theory;
research of dynamical systems using parallel computing and research into relevant applied tasks.
Major achievements of the project include solutions to a range of significant problems in the theory of dynamical systems: a solution of the 33rd Palis-Pugh problem, the presentation of an effective (polynomial) algorithm for the topological classification of two-dimensional Morse-Smale systems, a solution to the fundamental problem of stabilizing heterodimensional cycles in high regularity, a solution to the problem of Arnold diffusion in convex multidimensional domains, and more.
The results have been published in leading international scientific journals and presented at international conferences. Our research in the field of hyperchaos and bifurcation theory featured in a special issue of the leading international journal Chaos. Scientific publications indexed on the Web of Science database in this field feature 70 articles by our researchers—including 45 in Q1 journals and 20 in Q2 journals. Our staff have also spoken at 30 conferences.
The International Laboratory of Dynamical Systems and Applications currently has around 50 staff, including colleagues from universities in the US, the UK, and France. More than half of our researchers are under the age of 40. In 2022–2023, the laboratory will continue to work in accordance with the goals set two years ago.
The number of main research areas will remain the same. Their focus will be:
bifurcation in relation to the appearance of dynamic chaos and strange attractors;
topological methods of research into the global behaviour of dynamical systems;
the application of differential-geometric methods for studying the dynamics of foliation, Lie algebra and manifolds with additional structures; the topology of real algebraic curves;
the theory of parabolic equations;
the dynamics and statistics of ensembles of coherent structures, logistical models for describing epidemic dynamics, the study of non-linear waves in chains of coupled oscillators;
the development of software to study dynamical systems using parallel computing methods.
Expected results include findings on the conditions that lead to the creation of the Rovella attractor, findings on the conditions under which global bifurcation of multidimensional systems with homoclinic and heteroclinic tangencies lead to the creation of Lorentz attractors, new types of pseudohyberbolic Lorentz attractors (we will create geometric models and posit criteria for the creation of such attractors), research into the bifurcation of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with non-rough heteroclinic contours comprising two saddle focuses of different topological types, and more.
Staff of the laboratory plan to take part in the 29th International Congress of Mathematicians, which will be held in St. Peterburg in July 2022. The event is a major meeting point for experts in pure and applied mathematics from all over the world, and is one of the oldest scientific congresses. In addition to the main congress, there will be satellite conferences devoted to various specialized areas of mathematics. These include a conference on dynamical systems hosted at the International Laboratory of Dynamical Systems and Applications. We have invited around 40 speakers to take part in the event.

Research Reveals RNA's Role in Cancer Progression
An international group of scientists and medical specialists, including HSE researchers, examined the role played by microRNA (miRNA) and long non-coding RNAs on the progression of ovarian cancer. Having analysed more than a hundred tumour samples, they found that miRNA can prevent cell mutation while long non-coding RNAs have the opposite effect of enabling such mutations. These findings can help design new drugs which act by regulating miRNA concentrations. The study was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
‘We Managed to Bring Together Specialists in AI, Pure Mathematics, and Neurobiology’
In early September, the HSE University Faculty of Computer Science hosted the international conference Computer Methods of Cognitome Analysis. The event was organised by the International Laboratory of Algebraic Topology and Its Applications at the faculty.
Russian Researchers Propose New Approach to Studying Facial Emotion Recognition
Researchers of the HSE University and the Southern Federal University (SFedU) have tested a new method for studying the perception of facial emotional expressions. They suggest that asking subjects to recognise emotional expressions from dynamic video clips rather than static photographs can improve the accuracy of findings, eg in psychiatric and neurological studies. The paper is published in Applied Sciences.
Academics Started Working Even More During the Pandemic
Academics’ work week became even longer during the pandemic. This is true of researchers from different countries, independently of their gender and specialisation, an international research team with HSE University participation found. Their working time during the pandemic was 51 hours compared to the usual 40. The increased number of working hours per week seems to have become part of the new academic norm. The results of the study were published in the Plos One journal.
HSE Researchers Develop New Method for Analysing Genetic Admixture of Populations
Researchers of the HSE International Laboratory of Statistical and Computational Genomics together with their international colleagues have proposed a new statistical method for analysing population admixture that makes it possible to determine the time and number of migration waves more accurately. The history of Colombians and Mexicans (descendants of Native Americans, Spaniards and Africans) features two episodes of admixture that occurred about 350 and 200 years ago for Mexicans and 400 and 100 years ago for Colombians. The results were published in the Plos Genetics journal.
Scholars from Moscow and Vladivostok Join Efforts to Study Institutes and Preferences in Economic Behaviour
Applications from HSE departments for the ‘Mirror Laboratories’ open project competition are open until May 20. One of the ‘mirror laboratories’ successfully operating today was created as a result of a similar competition in 2020 by economists from HSE University and Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) to study institutes and preferences in economic behaviour. Alexis Belianin, Head of the HSE International Laboratory for Experimental and Behavioural Economics, talked about how peers from Moscow and Vladivostok collaborate.
Stress Disorders More Prevalent among Doctors due to the Pandemic
Psychologists from HSE University have joined their peers from Ekaterinburg to look into the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of Russian doctors. They found that medical staff are suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression more often than before. The results of the study were published in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology Opens at HSE University
The laboratory will be led by Robert Sandlersky, a specialist in energy and mass transfer and the study of other properties of landscapes via satellite imagery and Senior Research Fellow at the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences. New International Laboratory to Study Lighting Flashes and Volcanic Lightning
