‘Online Classes Provide a More Comfortable Learning Environment’
Professor Almira Ousmanova of the European Humanities University, Vilnius, has run a course on ‘Visuality in Contemporary Culture’ and a research seminar for students of the HSE University Faculty of Humanities. The events were held as part of the ‘Digital Professors’ project in the 2020/21 academic year. In her interview with the HSE News Service, Prof. Ousmanova explains what her students learned and how she was named one of HSE’s best teachers.

Russian Government Approves Programme of HSE Development until 2030
The Programme of HSE Development until 2030 has been approved by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s order. The document outlines the goals, tasks and responsibilities of the government and HSE University for its strategic development. According to the programme, the university’s strategic goal is its continuing development as a leading research, educational, analytical, consulting, and project university, which can compete head-to-head with the world’s best universities.
Registration for International Data Analysis Olympiad Now Open
The HSE Faculty of Computer Science, Yandex, and Otkritie Bank are holding the fifth International Data Analysis Olympiad (IDAO). There will be two competition stages: the qualifying round will last from February 1 to 28, 2022, and the finals will take place from April 16-17. Registration for the event is already underway.
IAC Welcomes New Members and Discusses HSE University Development

'My Amateur Interest in Korean Art Had Evolved into a Profession'
On November 4-6, 2021, the 14th Kyujanggak International Symposium on Korean Studies took place. This is one of the world’s most prestigious academic Korean Studies gatherings, attracting leading experts from various countries. Elena Khokhlova, Associate Professor of the HSE School of Asian Studies, presented the results of her research at the symposium. HSE Student Team Wins Grant in Masters of Hospitality Competition
The all-Russia competition, a project of the Russia — Land of Opportunities presidential platform, saw the students compete with other teams of young contestants. The team led by Alexander Aksyutin, a master’s student of the HSE Graduate School of Business, received a grant of 1.4 million Russian rubles, which the team plans to spend on a social project to promote tourism in Voronezh Oblast.
HSE University Strengthens Ties with Netherlands in Agricultural Research and Education
On November 9, 2021, HSE University signed a memorandum of understanding with Wageningen University & Research, a major university in the Netherlands and one of the leading agricultural research institutes in the world. Participants of the signing ceremony included HSE University Rector Nikita Anisimov, President of the Wageningen University & Research Executive Board Professor Louise Fresco, and Dutch Ambassador to Russia Gilles Beschoor Plug.
German Students Explore St. Petersburg and Russian History during HSE University’s Summer School
This September, 16 German students spent three weeks exploring the political and cultural space of St. Petersburg during the Summer School ‘The Topography of Imperial Power’ organized by the HSE Department of History in cooperation with the Department of the History of Eastern Europe (Georg-August University of Göttingen).
Tired People: A New Exhibition at HSE ART GALLERY
From October 8 to November 14, 2021, the HSE ART GALLERY is hosting an annual exhibition of works by students and teachers at the HSE Art and Design School. Curated by Alexandra Kuznetsova, Yulia Yusma, and Diana Machulina, the exhibition’s theme is fatigue, which has become a way of life for people. The artists offer viewers a multidisciplinary study of the current state of humanity and society. The HSE News Service visited the exhibition to learn more about the artists.
