Hannah Kanu, from Freetown in Sierra Leone, is a second-year student of the Master’s in Law of International Trade and Dispute Resolution at the HSE University Faculty of Law. With 2024 coming to an end, the HSE News Service has asked students to reflect on the year gone by and their time at the university in general. In this instalment, Hannah talks about discovering Russia and the rewards and challenges of studying in Moscow—including the Russian word she finds the most difficult.

The HSE Experience

Before joining, I knew that HSE was a top-rated university in Russia and recognised worldwide. I learned about HSE through a friend while planning to further my studies. It was an easy choice for me, as HSE offered an excellent academic reputation along with the perfect course for my interests.

The admission process was straightforward and smooth. I submitted my portfolio, attended an interview, and received my admission decision within two weeks. The speed and clarity of the process were impressive. I maintained constant communication with the admissions team, who were always ready to assist me when needed.

My experience at HSE has been both challenging and rewarding. The coursework has been intense but engaging. I have particularly enjoyed classes on international trade law and dispute resolution, where the professors are knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects.

The teaching methods encourage active participation, making classes dynamic and interactive. While the workload can be stressful at times, it is also fulfilling

I actively communicate with both international and Russian students. My group is incredibly diverse in terms of cultures and backgrounds, which enriches our interactions and fosters a strong sense of community.

Life Outside Class

I absolutely love Moscow! The city is vibrant with rich history and culture. I've managed to visit several iconic landmarks, which have all left me in awe.

I live in Hostel 5, where the staff are exceptionally friendly and always willing to help. I am fortunate to have a single room that provides all the amenities I need for comfortable living. In my spare time, I enjoy singing and playing music. Cooking is also one of my passions.

I have travelled to over five cities in Russia, each offering stunning sights. My favourite destination so far has been Sochi, particularly the beautiful Black Sea.

My Russian is improving steadily; however, I still find certain words challenging. One of the most difficult words I've come across is ‘субъективность’ (subjectivity)

New Year and Future Plans

I plan to spend New Year’s with my family outside of Russia. My friends and family are very supportive of my decision to study abroad. While no one has visited me yet, I miss the warmth of home-cooked meals and the close-knit community back in Sierra Leone.

I aspire to work in international dispute resolution, particularly focusing on negotiations and arbitration. My ultimate goal is to work in The Hague.

I encourage current and prospective students to embrace every opportunity that comes their way at HSE. The experiences here are invaluable for personal growth and professional development.
