
First Semi-Final of Season IX of Science Battles: From Russian Post to Gender Inequality
The first semi-final of the new season of Science Battles took place at VDNKh. Four researchers from the Moscow, St Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod campuses of HSE University came together on one stage to prove that science recognises neither geographical nor disciplinary boundaries. The theme of the evening—Conquering Mountain Peaks—perfectly reflected the spirit of the competition: chemical formulas, social problems, psychology, and law all appeared side by side.

Next-Generation Cardiology: AI, Genetics, and Personalised Medicine
More than 400 specialists from Russia and other countries participated in the 'Genetics and the Heart' Congress hosted by HSE University. Experts discussed the latest advances in clinical and molecular cardiology, new approaches to managing rare diseases, challenges in genome editing, and the role of artificial intelligence in interpreting medical and genetic data. A central theme of the congress was the practical integration of genetic knowledge into routine clinical practice.

Tying Knots, Eating Sweets, and Playing Go: HSE University Celebrates Chinese New Year
On February 18, 2026, a celebration of Chinese New Year was held in the central atrium of the Pokrovka building. The festive programme showcased the rich traditions of the holiday, including dance and violin performances, folk games, and a tea ceremony. The event was organised by HSE University's Chinese Culture Club and the Support and Career Centre for International Students and Alumni.

HSE University Hosts Major Gaming Industry Festival GameDevFest 2026
In January, HSE University hosted the third GameDevFest of the Faculty of Computer Science—a computer game festival organised by the School of Software Engineering and the project group ‘Computer Game Software Engineering—PIKI’ with the participation of the Vintorog game studio. Guests had the opportunity to play a variety of video games, including demo versions created by FCS students and other aspiring game designers.

The 24th Christmas film seminar of the HSE Laboratory for Studies in Economic Sociology (LSEI), held at the end of December, was devoted to the causes of anxiety and depression among young people. The focus of the discussion was the 2018 film Eighth Grade, whose main character is a 13-year-old schoolgirl.

Overcoming Challenges as a Team: Students of the School of Foreign Languages Present Innovative Projects for Companies
Following an established tradition, the HSE School of Foreign Languages held a pre-New Year poster session, during which fourth-year undergraduate students of the Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication programme defended their practice-oriented projects. The assessment panel included representatives of major companies and organisations. Working together with HSE students, they shared their professional experience, skills, and expertise.

School Students Master Communication with GigaChat at HSE and Sber Hackathon
In late December 2025, a unique competition was held at HSE University where participants solved challenges not by writing code, but solely by interacting with Sber’s GigaChat artificial intelligence model. The Improm(p)tu hackathon was an experiment less about programming skills than a new form of literacy: the ability to work effectively with AI by translating complex problems into a language neural networks can understand.

HSE University–St Petersburg held the Third International Academic Conference ‘Army, Elites, and Society in the Middle East and North Africa.’ The event brought together researchers from Russia, Oman, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and several other countries.

HSE University Presents Game Engineering Innovations at Moscow International Video Games Week
HSE University recently participated in a key 2025 gaming industry event, the Moscow International Video Games Week (MIVGW). HSE MIEM took part in several formats, hosting an open day for its online Master’s programme ‘Digital Engineering for Computer Games’ and a workshop ‘Gamedev Automation: How AI is Changing the Approach to Virtual Simulation Design.’ Furthermore, the ‘Game Engineering and Interactive Systems’ workshop and indie studio Bear Head Studio showcased their new game engine—the Claw Engine—at the exhibition area at Skolkovo. Experts of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science joined in panel discussions.
