Is Increased Democratization Domestically Linked to Improved Government Performance in Eastern Europe after the Cold War?

Thomas J. Volgy, Professor at the School of Government and Public Policy, University of Arizona USA and Executive Director of the International Studies Association is a political scientist specialising in international politics, democratic processes and domestic public policy. At the XV International April Conference this year Professor Volgy will be delivering two papers, one on his own and one with two fellow academics. We asked him to tell the English News service  more about them and about his work with HSE.

Oxford Professor Visits HSE in Saint Petersburg

At the invitation of the Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science, renowned sociologist and statistician Tom Snijders is visiting HSE St. Petersburg on March 9-12. Dr. Snijders is a Professor at Oxford University (Great Britain), an emeritus fellow of Nuffield College, and a Professor at the University of Groningen (Netherlands).

April 10th is the closing date for applications for this year’s Fund for Educational Innovation (FOI) competition. Alexei Malafeev, Associate Professor at the Department for Foreign Languages, HSE Nizhny Novgorod, explains how to create an interesting project and put it into practice. His programme for teaching English Exercise Maker won the FOI competition two years ago.

Oleg Voskoboynikov, the youngest full professor at the Higher School of Economics, talks about the reason for the popularity of metaphors that refer to that era, why the ‘Suffering Middle Ages’ group on VKontakte [Russia’s largest social media site — Ed.] is not the same thing as medieval studies and how the desire to be different from everyone else can lead a student to study the Middle Ages.

Alexey Novikov has been named the new Dean of the HSE Graduate School of Urban Studies and Planning. He will be continuing the work of one of HSE's founders and the School's first dean, Alexander Vysokovsky, who died unexpectedly on December 22 of last year.
