HSE Launches Site in Chinese

HSE recently committed to developing a Chinese version of the university’s Admissions site, which is the result of a joint effort by the Online Media Unit, the School of Asian Studies, and Chinese students at HSE. Rather than a ‘brochure-type’ webpage, the site contains nearly all information needed for Chinese students to enrol in undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral programmes offered by HSE. This means that a prospective students from China are not only able to read about HSE, but to complete an online form and even check whether they can receive a scholarship.

According to Ivan Prostakov, HSE Vice Rector for International Affairs, ‘the launch of the Chinese version of the HSE website is a milestone event for a number of reasons. Cooperation with Chinese universities and interest in teaching students from China are essential for us. As of today, we have over 200 partners in Europe and North America, and only 15 in China’.

Prostakov stresses that this number will grow considering the development and prospects for economic and political relations between our countries, as well as the role that China has begun to play in the global educational market. Importantly, Chinese is spoken not only in China and Taiwan, but also by the widespread Chinese diaspora in the Asian Pacific region and America. This means that HSE’s website is truly going global.

Professor Aleksey Maslov, who supervises text writing for the HSE’s Chinese website, says that ‘the Chinese version is in some ways unique, since it hasn’t been merely translated from the Russian version, but adapted to the Chinese language used by the classical Chinese universities. This provides HSE with an outstanding presentation in the Chinese-speaking world. Even if a prospective student speaks English fluently, it’s always easier and nicer to read in the native Chinese. In addition, the website will be more actively indexed in Chinese search engines. This means that HSE is becoming more open for another 1.5 billion people’.
