Engineering and Mathematics School Opens New Master’s Track in AI
The Engineering and Mathematics School run by HSE University and VK is launching a new master’s track: AI Hardware and Software. The track will be part of the Master’s programme ‘Internet of Things and Cyber-physical Systems,’ and will be taught by VK experts and HSE University faculty.
The track in AI Hardware and Software will train specialists capable of creating software infrastructure for processors and other devices used to solve tasks related to AI.
The programme for the 2023/24 academic includes academic courses taught by HSE University research staff, as well as specialised courses in relevant IT fields taught by specialists from VK. Students will study computing system architecture, neurocomputer system programming, and industrial and multithreaded programming. These additional courses will be specified in graduates’ diplomas.
Admissions for the track will begin in September. Those wishing to enrol must complete a test assignment and attend an interview. Applicants will need a knowledge of the basics of circuit design, the design principles of digital microelectronic devices, and programming fundamentals in C/C++ or another high-level language.
Students of the track can also apply to one of the school’s workshops in AI hardware, applied AI, virtual platform solutions, or compilers and high-load systems. The workshops are practice oriented, giving students an opportunity to develop solutions to real technological tasks overseen by experts from VK. Students of the workshops also receive a monthly stipend of 40,000 roubles, and can combine their workshop activities with their main degree programme.
‘The new master’s track was developed as part of the partnership between VK and HSE University. The Engineering and Mathematics School already operates a workshop where students deal with AI hardware. They work to solve real industry tasks from VK and gain valuable experience working with mentors from VK and HSE University. The master’s students strengthen the workshop teams and work with them to implement even more interesting projects,’ says Fedor Ivanov, Director of the Engineering and Mathematics School.
‘Developers of AI hardware and software possess skills in the development of software in high-level languages and embedded software for specialised processors and microprocessors. Such specialists understand the fundamentals of the optimal construction of AI systems and neurocomputer technologies,’ explains Sergey Nefedov, Supervisor of the Master’s track ‘AI Hardware and Software.’
Georgiy Shchelkanov
‘Close cooperation between business and universities helps to adapt early-career IT specialists to current industry demands while they are still learning. VK and HSE University implement educational programmes in traditional formats and experimental projects, including the Engineering and Mathematics School. The launch of the new track is another step in the development of the school’s workshops. It is an opportunity for students to take courses whose contents are close to real business tasks and then hone their knowledge in practice,’ added Georgiy Shchelkanov, Head of VK’s engineering schools.
Applications to enrol in the Master’s programme ‘Internet of things and Cyber-physical Systems’ can be submitted until August 13. The programme is taught in Russian with some courses in English. Russian government and HSE scholarships and tuition fee waivers available. The programme will begin in September 2023.
