HSE University to Enhance Cooperation with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology
On September 20, a delegation from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) visited HSE University. The Rector of HSE University Nikita Anisimov and the Chairman of the Academy Châu Văn Minh discussed promising avenues for cooperation in the fields of education and science. The heads of HSE departments presented the opportunities the university provides to international students and researchers.
While delivering a welcoming speech, Nikita Anisimov reminded attendees that Vietnam is Russia's priority partner in the Asia-Pacific region. Bilateral relations are developing successfully, and this is the only country in Southeast Asia that Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited six times.
HSE Rector emphasised that the university possesses all the necessary competencies for effective collaboration with the Academy and its institutes in each of the areas in demand in Vietnam. In June 2024, as part of the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Vietnam, HSE University representatives signed a memorandum of understanding and an addendum with the Institute of Mathematics of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
Nikita Anisimov spoke about HSE University, stressing that it is the only Russian university in the top 35 of the QS Top 50 Under 50 Ranking. HSE students demonstrate outstanding success in international competitions in programming and mathematics.
HSE Rector highlighted the attractiveness of HSE University for international students, with more than 5,000 students coming from over 100 different countries. He also mentioned the collaboration with the institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, publications in leading academic journals, and developments in the field of artificial intelligence. He concluded by noting that more than 50 students from HSE University started learning Vietnamese this year.
Prof. Châu Văn Minh, in turn, thanked the HSE University’s Rector for a warm welcome and shared his impressions of the tour of HSE University on Pokrovsky Bulvar, which was organised for the Vietnamese delegation before the meeting. He stated that, like the other members of the delegation, he was impressed by the development indicators of HSE provided in the report and the close cooperation between HSE University and the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Châu Văn Minh spoke about the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, which was established in 1975, immediately after the war ended. It has now around 40 different departments, institutes, and centres, as well as two universities under its control. The Academy, which is overseen by the Vietnamese government, conducts both fundamental and applied research and develops new technologies in key areas such as biotechnology, ecology, computer science, artificial intelligence, and space exploration.
VAST Chairman mentioned that he, like Nikita Anisimov, is a graduate of Moscow State University, where he studied chemistry and specialised in biochemistry. He expressed his hope that the Academy and HSE University would establish cooperation through joint degree programmes, allowing students to alternate their studies between Russia and Vietnam.
The heads of HSE University’s scientific departments and faculty deans also attended the meeting.
Leonid Gokhberg, First Vice-Rector of HSE University and Director of the HSE ISSEK, emphasised the importance of social and economic research, as well as scientific research conducted at the university. Sergey Garbuk, Director for Research Projects, spoke about the development of AI technologies and their implementation in various industries.
Alexander Tonevitsky, Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, Ivan Arzhantsev, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, and Nikolay Kurichev, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technology, discussed the prospects of their respective faculties. Ivan Arzhantsev also mentioned that, as a teacher with 30 years of experience, he had trained students from Vietnam and noted, ‘As a rule, they have outstanding mathematical abilities and are very hardworking.’
Summing up the meeting, Châu Văn Minh proposed preparing a general cooperation agreement between the two organisations, which would later be supplemented by annexes on collaboration between faculties and institutes. He also invited his Russian colleagues to visit Vietnam.
‘Vietnam is a wonderful country, and I am glad that we will continue to develop our cooperation. Science is crucial for any university, and today, HSE has become stronger thanks to the wonderful scientists who have visited us,’ said Nikita Anisimov.
At the end of the meeting, he presented VAST Chairman with a book on Russian science, art, and culture authored by HSE professors, while Châu Văn Minh gifted the Rector of HSE University a painting depicting the first building of their academy.
