HSE-MSU Sailing Regatta Set to Reach International Level
The first sailing regatta between HSE and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) was held in the Strogino water meadows and served as the beginning of a new tradition for student club competitions. Students from the two universities’ teams agreed to form a single team to participate in next year’s world sailing championship, which can be considered the main outcome of the regatta. And for those who are more interested in numbers, the teams were tied for most of the day, but it was MSU that won the five races with a score of 3:2.
Number of Foreign Professors at HSE Perm Increases
In the new academic year, Aron Spencer (PhD in Management) and Sara Busse Spencer (PhD in Sociology) will teach several courses for Management undergraduates and for students taking the Masters in Marketing. The university has signed international academic contracts with them.
Art and Design School Fashion Show
On June 16, the courtyard of the Art and Design School (HSE Faculty of Communications, Media and Design) was turned into a true podium with a fashion show taking place under the Black Box open sky. Thirteen original costume models were prepared by second-year students of the school as part of their final project defence.
Music and Politics
On 17th June in the Professors Hall at HSE Ilya Mochalov, second year Politics student at HSE and fourth year music student at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, gave a solo piano concert. Ilya has won a number of Russian and international prizes at music festivals and competitions. At the concert he played works by his favourite composer, Sergei Rakhmaninov.
School of Public Administration and Fulbright Programme Summer School
From June 7−12, 2015, the International Summer School on Sustainable Development of Urban Agglomerations took place as part of HSE’s cooperation with the Institute of International Education (Fulbright Programme). The summer school was organized by the HSE School of Public Administration together with the Fulbright Programme in Russia. This summer school was a continuation in a series of joint summer schools held with the Fulbright Programme (2012 and 2013) devoted to various aspects of theory and practice in sustainable development.
HSE and MSU to compete on the water
The world-famous competition between Oxford and Cambridge universities traces its history back to 1829. These sporting duels are part of a broader tradition of genial one-upmanship between the two universities, which has been held on the river Thames for 186 years. This year, the tradition is coming to Moscow – where the capital's two leading universities will battle it out in a regatta.
Culture Studies Expedition Dispels Stereotypes
The fourth HSE School of Cultural Studies Cultural Effects of Borders annual road trip passed through Rostov Oblast, Dagestan, Kalmykia and Chechnya. On the two week journey, students looked for regional cultural differences, talked to the local people and conducted their own research. On their return they talked to HSE News about the oldest city in the Russian Federation, local variations in women’s clothing and the taste of grilled ground squirrel.
American Academic’s Library Opens in HSE
On Thursday 4th June the Richard Stites Memorial Library opened at HSE St Petersburg. Courtney Nemroff, USA Acting Consul General to St Petersburg was there for the grand opening ceremony.

On May 20, 2015, Dr Michael Minch, Professor of Philosophy at Utah Valley University, gave an open lecture at HSE Nizhny Novgorod.
The Audience Must Be Ready to Fall in Love
10th June is the date for the annual Miss HSE beauty contest. Every year the same team of graduates gathers to organise it. They are convinced that working on this project helped their professional development. One of the organising committee members, HSE alumnus Yuri Korchagin talked to HSE News about how to run a large-scale event without any money, why Miss HSE is better than Miss Russia and how to observe the rules of the genre in an academic environment.
