In the context of intensifying global geopolitical and technological competition, leading Chinese educational institutions—Zhejiang International Studies University and Peking University—organised an International Summer School. Their joint programme focused on studying global, regional, and urban development strategies. The HSE Faculty of Urban and Regional Development took part in this event.

This major international project brought together professors from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), the Communication University of China, Zhejiang International Studies University, as well as HSE University, Sultan Qaboos University (Oman), Cairo University (Egypt), and the Xavier Institute of Management (India).

The school’s main aim was to help students understand the phenomenon and mechanisms of regional integration through the synergy of infrastructures and by counteracting the fragmentation of global politics, economics, and science.

The key areas of study of global, regional, and urban development strategies at the summer school included:

BRICS countries such as Russia, India, and Egypt.

Promising regions, including the Gulf states and Central Asia.

Chinese regions, such as Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.

Lectures delivered by professors helped students develop strategic and diplomatic skills within an interdisciplinary framework. The programme is designed to train highly qualified specialists equipped not only with foreign language proficiency but also with advanced technological knowledge and a global strategic outlook.

The interest shown by Chinese partners in HSE’s Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) is due to its longstanding expertise: the faculty brings together professionals with years of experience and a wealth of successfully completed urban development projects.

Victoria Khomich

‘And of course, geographical scope: in China, each region at the level of a province or a municipality directly under the central government has its own local urban centres focused on development in that particular area, taking into account geographical, climatic, and economic features. Our faculty, in turn, works across the whole of Russia and implements projects in different regions. We possess a comprehensive theoretical and practical base, as well as academic and expert capacity, to share our experience abroad,’ noted Victoria Khomich, First Deputy Dean of FURD.

Through interregional integration, the mutual study of urban and regional development strategies, and the exchange of expertise, FURD continues to strengthen its position as Russia’s leading urban studies hub while steadily opening up new opportunities abroad.
