Parenting Styles and Economics
Does the economy influence the way people bring up their children? How can we determine and measure a child’s utility? How can parenting styles be categorized in an economic model? These are the questions that Professor Fabricio Zilibotti of the University of Zurich addressed in his honorary lecture ‘Parenting with Style’, which he delivered at the April International Academic Conference.
Academic Discussions Help Resolve Practical Problems
Russia’s economic situation, ways of overcoming the current crisis, educational development, social policy, and international scientific cooperation – this and much more were the focus of HSE’s XVI April International Academic Conference, which ended this past Friday. During a video interview, participants of the conference’s plenary sessions and meetings shared their view of the main issues of the global agenda and talked about the ways academic discussions help resolve practical problems. The interviews were prepared by students of the Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design.
Intellectual Capital: Measurement and Management
During the XVI April International Academic Conference HSE held a joint session on Intellectual Capital of Companies together with the European Institute of Advanced Studies in Management (Brussels). During this session, Professor Zambon of the University of Ferrara gave a keynote lecture and participated in round-table discussions on various problems associated with intellectual capital and intangible assets.
Multiculturalism Aids the Development of Russian Society
The broader the ethnic diversity, the greater the level of tolerance to people from other cultures. Multiculturalism has a positive effect on societal development in Russian regions. This is evidenced by research into the relationship between heterogeneity and socio-psychological capital of personality, that was carried out by Leading Research Fellow at the International Scientific-Educational Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research Alexander Tatarko. The report was presented at the XVI April International Academic Conference.
Professor Arie Lewin: ‘I’m Looking forward to Being Surprised!’
Arie Y. Lewin, is Professor of Strategy and International Business at Duke University Fuqua School of Business and for the past 18 years has been the Director of The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER). He gave an honorary lecture on ‘Dynamics of Online Marketplaces for STEM Talent: Innovation 2.0’ on the third day of the April Conference and spoke to HSE News service about his impressions of the conference, emerging economies marketing trends and other perspectives.
Policymakers Are Like Modern Sisyphuses
On April 13-17, the HSE Public Policy Department will host aseries of lectures by Professor Philippe Zittoun, an internationally recognized expert in policymaking and policy research. He is currently Research Professor in Political Science, University of Lyon (LET-ENTPE); Research Fellow at PACTE, Science Po Grenoble; and Vice-Chair of the Research Committee "Public Policy and Administration" of IPSA. He was a Visiting Professor at Yale University in 2010.

HSE Researchers Receive Gaidar Award
HSE Professors Anna Yurko and Fabian Slonimczyk have received the prestigious Gaidar Award for young economists. Their research, titled 'Assessing the Impact of the Maternity Capital Policy in Russia,' was published in the respected journal 'Labour Economics', the official publication of the European Association of Labour Economists. Our researchers used mathematical models to assess the impact of maternity capital policy on the birthrate in Russia.
‘During a Crisis or Economic Downturn, Marketing Becomes More Important’
Professor Wesley J. Johnston from Georgia State University, College of Business is a keynote speaker at the April Conference seminar Contemporary Management Research in Emerging Markets. He is a Member of the HSE Council and has been collaborating on projects since 2011 with Olga Tretyak, Academic Supervisor at the Faculty of Management Research and Study Group for Russian Marketing Studies 'Modern Marketing Practices'. During a break at the conference Professor Johnston talked to HSE English News service about the benefits for PhD students of participating in conferences, about the functions of marketing and marketing in Russia and about his fruitful cooperation with HSE.
