Every year, winners of school olympiads make up a significant cohort of the first-year undergraduate students. Such young people are distinguished not only by their deep subject knowledge, but also by a broad outlook, and a strong desire to be part of university life in all its diversity. HSE News Service asked prospective first-year students who received 100 points on the Unified State Exam and the winners of various olympiads what helped them to get enrolled and why they chose HSE University.

Researchers from HSE in Nizhny Novgorod and the Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory (CAO RAS) examined data on microwave emissions from several active solar regions. Astronomers discovered that a few hours prior to a flare, there was an increase in oscillations in the region with the highest observed brightness of the microwave emission during the flare. This method can potentially be used to achieve more accurate predictions of severe solar flares. The study has been published in Geomagnetism and Aeronomy.

The online Master’s programme ‘Master of Computer Vision’ recently held a webinar ‘Face recognition. How does it work and how does it break?‘ as part of its admission campaign, with the participation of the programme’s business partner, Huawei. Participants learned about the basic principles of Face ID algorithms and the features of face recognition technologies relative to other deep learning models, as well as some of the tricks that can mislead artificial intelligence systems.

A team of students from HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod and Minin University have created a mobile application and a web service for recognising emotions in photographs. This solution can be useful in marketing, education, personnel management—any areas where the quality of interpersonal communication matters.

Nizhny Novgorod has hosted the Investment Leaders Forum organised by the Nizhny Novgorod Region Development Corporation jointly with executive authorities under the patronage of Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin. The participants discussed the region's investment potential and highlighted the best practices in investment attraction and the support and implementation of investment projects. The forum was partnered with HSE University.

ConCort 2023, a forum dedicated to research in corpus technology and computer science in the humanities, brought together experts and students from all over Russia. The participants discussed the latest developments in corpus linguistics, including the rapidly developing field of digital humanities.

On April 9, HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod held an Open Day. In 2023, the campus offers programmes in humanities, socio-economic and computer sciences.
