A hackathon was held in Nizhny Novgorod for students in grades 9–11 as part of the Data Analysis National Olympiad (DANO). More than 90 school students in grades 9–11 from Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and the surrounding region, St Petersburg, Samara, Cheboksary, and Ufa—a total of 15 Russian regions—took part in the hackathon.

HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod has held an Open Day where high school and college students could get acquainted with educational programmes, receive consultations on preparation and admission, and attend interactive lectures and workshops.

Researchers from HSE in Nizhny Novgorod and the Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory (CAO RAS) examined data on microwave emissions from several active solar regions. Astronomers discovered that a few hours prior to a flare, there was an increase in oscillations in the region with the highest observed brightness of the microwave emission during the flare. This method can potentially be used to achieve more accurate predictions of severe solar flares. The study has been published in Geomagnetism and Aeronomy.

The online Master’s programme ‘Master of Computer Vision’ recently held a webinar ‘Face recognition. How does it work and how does it break?‘ as part of its admission campaign, with the participation of the programme’s business partner, Huawei. Participants learned about the basic principles of Face ID algorithms and the features of face recognition technologies relative to other deep learning models, as well as some of the tricks that can mislead artificial intelligence systems.

A university’s contribution to the development of society is not limited to education and science. Universities participate in wider life through open popular science lectures, master classes and festivals, expanding their boundaries and qualitatively influencing the intellectual environment.

A team of students from HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod and Minin University have created a mobile application and a web service for recognising emotions in photographs. This solution can be useful in marketing, education, personnel management—any areas where the quality of interpersonal communication matters.

Nizhny Novgorod has hosted the Investment Leaders Forum organised by the Nizhny Novgorod Region Development Corporation jointly with executive authorities under the patronage of Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin. The participants discussed the region's investment potential and highlighted the best practices in investment attraction and the support and implementation of investment projects. The forum was partnered with HSE University.
